In 1936, during World War II, France
needed a way to differentiate their vehicles from their nearby
German enemies and identify the registration of the vehicle at
night. The French transportation department felt changing the
headlight colors of the cars would be the best way to easily
decipher oncoming traffic. With further investigation and testing
they found by using a yellow light it could reduce glare in
inclement weather and differentiated themselves from the
German automobiles.
The French engineers realized that
white light with the blue component removed (called "selective
yellow") reduced glare and performed better in poor weather
conditions. "Selective yellow" lights can improve a driver's
ability to see in fog or rain because of the way the human eye
interacts with different colors of light. Blue is a very difficult
color for the human eye to process correctly because they are the
shortest visible wavelengths and tend to focus in front of the
eye's retina rather that upon it. Also, blue is difficult to look
at because it naturally stimulates glare. A yellow lens will filter
the blue from the light leaving a much reduced glare and improved
inclement weather light. That is why using these French fog lights
specifically will help increase visibility.
Because blue makes up such a small
amount of a standard bulb's natural light, using a yellow lens does
not filter out hardly any light produced from the bulb. It merely
reduces the glare inducing blue spectrum from the light. Perfect
for inclement weather!
